Lecture 24: Online Advertising
Date: Wednesday, December 7, 2011
Agenda
Lecture Assignment 24
Due at the start of class, Friday, December 9.
Please submit answers to these questions
either as a hard copy (typeset or handwritten are OK) or by email to
jteresco AT siena.edu by the start of class. Please use a clear subject line
when submitting by email (e.g., CS 180 Lecture
Assignment 24, Joe Student). We will discuss these
questions at the start of class, so no late submissions are
accepted.
- Discuss the ethics of using tools such as the Firefox
Adblock Plus extension to stop
ads from being displayed by your browser. The main issue is between
blocking ads because they can be intrusive and annoying or even
malicious, and ensuring that web publishers receive the advertising
revenue they may rely upon for their existence. Is this different
from fast-forwarding over television commercials with a DVR, or
flipping past a magazine advertisement without looking at it at all?
(6 points)
- Critique the new Siena College
Athletics page. Briefly describe the
technologies you recognize in the HTML source of the pages. Do you
think the page looks good? Is it easy to find what you might be
looking for on a collegiate athletic department web site? (6
points)
