Texts

The required text for the course is Concepts of Programming Languages, Twelfth Edition (Pearson, 2018, ISBN 978-0-13-4997186-2) by Robert W. Sebesta. This is available from the Siena College bookstore and elsewhere. Be sure to get the correct edition, as this is the latest in a long series of textbooks.

There will be various additional readings assigned from freely available sources.

• Our FreeBSD server is noreaster.teresco.org. Some of the compilers and interpreters we will be experimenting with are installed there.
• To install Haskell in a GitHub codespace, you can issue the command

  curl --proto '=https' --tlsv1.2 -sSf https://get-ghcup.haskell.org | sh

  • Using git on your own computer
    • If you have a Mac set up to run Java, you likely already have everything you need. You can issue the same commands used at the Git Bash prompt in the lab to your Mac's Terminal application.
    • If you have Windows, you likely will need to install Git Bash.
  • To change your default git editor from vim to the more user-friendly nano, you can issue this command in the terminal where you run git:

    git config --global core.editor "nano"
